Survival has always been one of man's need since time immemorial, somehow man has found how to continue to exist despite difficulties or challenges. The case is not different in the University of Nigeria Nsukka.
University of Nigeria Nsukka is one of the most formidable universities in Nigeria, founded in 1955 by Nnamdi Azikiwe the then Governor general and was the first autonomous university in Nigeria. It's motto "to restore the dignity of man" is a promise that has been kept throughout it's years of heraldic achievement. University of Nigeria popularly nicknamed 'the den' and it's students Lion and Lioness because of the symbolic lion and has proven beyond doubts that a den it is, in order to survive in the den one must be well equipped and duly informed.
Nonetheless these are tested and proven ways that will make your sojourn in University of Nigeria, Nsukka a successful and memorable one.
1. ADAPTING: Adaptation is very crucial in every new environment one finds his/herself and it is important to adapt real quick (fast memorizing of the various lecture halls, bus stands can not be overemphasized.)
2. STAY CONNECTED: The world they say is a global village but to access it to need an Android phone and internet access.
Try as much as you can to follow the informative groups on social media especially on WhatsApp(because you wouldn't want to miss submitting an assignment or attending to an urgent matter because you were not online)
3. TIME MANAGEMENT:
The phrase "African time" should not be part of anyone who wants to really survive in the University of Nigeria, as lecturers always keep to time( Imagine coming to 8:00am lecture by 8:30am, that is 30mins late and halfway into the lecture) and due to the large number of students it is vital one comes early and gets settled before the lecture begins.
4. BEHAVE LIKE A LION:
In order not to have problems in your field of study it is imperative that you blend and adjust to it's rules, this is because most times one's faculty or course of study will determine the person's way of life. (from the type of clothes to hair style and all that). In as much as this is good do not be limited in your thinking, reach out, learn, grow and be versatile (you will be needing it).
5. FRIENDSHIP : Friendships are born in a million ways but it's sole aim is to provide love and support, you need friend(s), because no one they say is an island. Good friends make things a lot easier. True friendship is a gift, (when you find one, keep it)
6. HAVE FUN: Remember "all works and no play makes Jack a dull boy" but I suggest you do that positively, Do not have the kind of fun that would jeopardize your future and the principal reason you came to the school
7. SOCIALIZE: This virus wasn't here before and won't linger, so there will be no need for continued self-isolation, Lol. You can socialize by joining church fellowships, clubs(moral wise) try build your network, you might need it after your stay here.
8. SPEND WISELY: Don't be a wasteful spender, you really have a lot to do with money so it's best to be calculative in your spending.
9. STUDY HARD, STUDY SMART: "Study to show yourself approved" always meet up with your notes, read ahead if you can. Don't listen to the league of "good grades doesn't matter."
Good grades does matter and can only be achieved through your hard work, persistence and consistency.
10. ASK QUESTIONS: "No one is a monopoly of knowledge" so do not feel too big or too small to ask questions and be clarified. It saves a lot of stress and avoid unnecessary mistakes. Learn from people's experiences.
In addition to these,
>> EAT GOOD FOOD
It is understood that due to the fact that most students find it difficult to manage their time, some skip morning food for their lectures.
This practice is unhealthy and can cause several health problems including ulcer.
Have you heard of the special meal?
No professor, lecturer nor student can resist the temptation of the wonderful Bambara nut cake popularly known as okpa di oku because of how nutritious and convenient the meal is, the residents of the den do not joke with it especially in that fresh and cool morning, downloading it before heading to class. (the meal is a life saver 😋)
Above all have a good relationship with God, it is widely believed that "if you are at peace with your maker, no evil shall befall you"
With this I believe you are well armed and ready to survive in the den.
